A look at the speaker lineup for the Retail Industry Leaders Association’s (RILA)
upcoming Logistics 2012 conference makes it clear that RILA takes the “leader”
part of its name seriously. The annual conference, to be held in Dallas Feb. 19–22,
will feature such influential voices as John Menzer, CEO of Michael’s Stores; Greg
Ip, U.S. economics editor for The Economist; Matt Rose, CEO of BNSF Railroad;
Eric Qualman, author of Socialnomics; and energy expert Chuck Taylor, founder of
Awake! Consulting. NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton and Navy SEAL Eric Greitens
will also be on hand to offer their views on leadership.
The main program will be organized around five tracks of strategic importance to
retail supply chain leaders: distribution, international logistics and sourcing, multichannel retailing, supply chain management, and transportation. Session topics
include “goods to person” fulfillment, cost-to-serve metrics, and attracting top talent.

Family affair
Many members of the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA) are family-owned third-party logistics companies. That’s why “Bridging Generations for Success,” the
theme of IWLA’s 2012 Annual Convention and Expo, is one that will likely resonate
with a large share of the attendees.
The event, planned for March 18–20 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, will include
a number of sessions devoted to management of a multigenerational business. There will
also be workshops on issues that affect all logistics and warehousing service providers,
including government affairs, employment law, and sustainability.
Special guest speakers include Hamid Moghadam, co-chief executive officer of the
industrial real estate developer Prologis. IWLA will also conduct its annual business meeting and present its annual achievement awards during the event.

Interested in trade-related news, legislative updates, and practical advice about
international trade and logistics operations? Then you might want to consider
attending the Coalition of New England Companies for Trade’s (CONECT) 16th
Annual Northeast Trade & Transportation Conference. The event, scheduled for
March 14–16 in historic Newport, R.I., typically attracts some 300 importers,
exporters, carriers, customs brokers, forwarders, government officials, and other
international experts from across the Northeast.
Keynote speakers and panels of experts will discuss “hot button” topics requested
by CONECT’s diverse membership, and lengthy Q&A sessions will guarantee lively
dialogue and the opportunity to put pressing questions to government policymakers.
Sessions will address operational concerns like customs regulations and rulings, cargo
security, and waterfront labor issues, as well as “macro” concerns such as global economic developments, pending legislation, and mode-specific market conditions.
Despite the serious subject matter, CONECT is definitely not an “all work and no
play” crowd. The group has planned a St. Patrick’s Day Irish coffee and dessert buffet and an annual gala dinner at Newport’s elegant Ochre Court mansion. Find out
