Here’s our monthly roundup of some of the charitable works and donations
by companies in the material handling and logistics space:
; The American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) is coordinating the delivery of emergency supplies to people affected by Hurricane Matthew. Among
the companies that provided assistance were Miami-based Performance
Team, which donated warehouse space for storing and organizing donated
supplies, as well as UPS Inc. and Saddle Creek Logistics Services, which
provided transportation and logistics services.
; Yusen Logistics (Americas) Inc. supported Boeing Co.’s work in coordinating shipments of relief supplies from Seattle to Charleston, S.C., to aid in
the recovery from Hurricane Matthew. Yusen provided delivery to Sea-Tac
Airport after coordinating warehouse services at its Seattle branch, which
included receiving, sorting, labeling, and repacking supplies such as bottled
water, diapers, blankets, and sanitizing wipes.
; Material handling equipment supplier Raymond Handling
Concepts Corp. (RHCC) held its third annual “Pink Pallet Jack
Project” online auction in support of Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. All proceeds generated by the sale of the 8210 Electric
Pallet Truck will benefit the Tina Fund in Greene, N.Y., and the
Hers Breast Cancer Foundation in Fremont, Calif.
; Third-party logistics service provider (3PL) Bonded Logistics
packed a company-record 6,000 shoeboxes during its annual
Operation Christmas Child outreach event, thanks to the more than 100
employees and family members who volunteered for the Samaritan’s Purse
project. The shoeboxes, which are filled with toys and school supplies, will
be delivered to needy children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster,
famine, and disease.
; DHL teamed up with the Special Olympics and the Cincinnati-Northern
Kentucky Airport (CVG) in September for the 4th annual DHL Plane Pull
event, raising $68,000 for Special Olympics Kentucky and its programs for
local athletes. More than 22 local businesses and civic groups competed in a
race to pull one of the 140,000-pound DHL Boeing 757s across the tarmac.
Logistics gives back
The material handling sector will see
both changes and challenges in the
upcoming year, if the word coming out of MHI’s annual conference
in Tucson, Ariz., is any indication.
Among other announcements, the
trade group shared news regarding
planned changes to its Modex trade
show and unveiled a forecast that
called for a modest economic recession in 2017.
Some things stay constant, however, and where MHI is concerned,
few are as constant as the support of
John Hill. Hill, now a director for the
logistics consultancy St. Onge Co.,
helped found the group’s Material
Handling Education Foundation
(MHEFI) in 1976 and has served on
the MHEFI board of directors since
1978. Hill has also contributed a
lifetime of service to the MHI board
and roundtable, serving in multiple
capacities since 1977.
During a ceremony at the conference to honor his years of service, Hill was designated an emeritus
member of the roundtable advisory
committee at MHI and a lifetime
director of MHEFI.
A former president of MHEFI and
MHI, Hill is also a former COO,
CEO, or other officer of various
automatic data collection and supply chain execution systems companies and has helped with more than
100 installations of automatic identification (AIDC) systems, warehouse equipment and warehouse
management systems (WMS), and
transportation management systems
(TMS), according to MHI.
Retail leaders, industry visionaries, and supply chain specialists will gather
in New York City on Jan. 15 for “Retail’s Big Show,” the National Retail
Federation’s (NRF) annual flagship convention and expo.
Now in its 106th year, the three-day jamboree will draw some 33,000
attendees from 3,326 retail companies to the Jacob K. Javits Convention
Center. With a crowd that size, attendees are assured of some serious networking opportunities, but there are plenty of other reasons to go. For
instance, 510 exhibitors will be on hand to showcase the latest retail technologies and solutions. Attendees will also find ample opportunity for education at the 55 breakout sessions.
This year’s speaker lineup will be headlined by Sir Richard Branson,
founder of the Virgin Group. The roster of 300 scheduled speakers also
includes William Dudley, CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York;
Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel; Mike McNamara, EVP and CIO of Target; and
history-making U.S. astronaut Scott Kelly.
