Lift truck with on-board charging: Retail stores and other
users of light-duty pallet trucks need equipment that is charged
and ready to work on demand. However, because space is at
a premium, these operations frequently lack dedicated battery
changing and charging areas. As a result, many rely on manual
equipment that requires increased operator effort
and limits productivity. The new Utilev UT15WE
AGM maintenance-free batteries charged so
the unit is ready when needed.
Five purchase options, offering different fork and
load backrest configurations, help ensure the
UT15WE fits the needs
of the application. The
UT15WE provides a
12-month manufacturer’s limited warranty and the support of an extensive network
that includes more than 340 reseller locations throughout North
America. (Utilev, www.utilev.com)
Supply chain dictionary: APICS, a professional association for
supply chain management, has published the 15th edition of its
APICS Dictionary, which provides terms and definitions in order
to promote a common understanding among supply chain professionals working in today’s global environment. To supplement
the updated dictionary, APICS has also announced an update
to the APICS LearnIt mobile application, which allows users to
access and study the more than 4,800 supply chain terms and
definitions contained within the APICS Dictionary from their
smartphones.
The 15th edition of the APICS Dictionary includes an additional
234 terms over the 14th edition, which was released in 2013. The
latest edition eliminates outdated terminology and incorporates
new terms and revised definitions from APICS’ Supply Chain
Operations Reference (SCOR) framework, SCOR Professional
(SCOR-P) program, and Certified in Logistics, Transportation, and
Distribution (CLTD) program in order to better reflect the current
industry landscape. (APICS, www.apics.org)
Packaging machine: At Pack Expo 2016 in Chicago, Retrotech
Inc., a subsidiary of Egemin Automation, showcased Jivaro, a
machine that offers ideal-size packaging solutions for order picking applications. Smaller orders often come in sizes that don’t
match box sizes and result in wasted box space. With Jivaro,
carton height is automatically cut down to the contents’ height
to achieve the smallest possible carton volume.
The Jivaro system assembles the box around its contents,
reducing the dim weight cost, as well as minimizing expenses for
corrugate, labor, and returns. According to the company, those
savings can mean a return-on-investment payback in as little as
12 months.
In addition, boxes created using Jivaro have a greater compressive strength than boxes with unused space. Packages and their
contents will arrive in better condition, reducing the need for
returns. (Retrotech Inc., www.retrotech.com)
U-shaped floor scale: Fairbanks Scales Inc. has introduced its
new Yellow Jacket U-shaped floor scale, which decreases weighing times by up to 50 percent in applications utilizing pallet jacks.
This scale is an ideal alternative to traditional floor scales in manufacturing and warehouse applications where floor space is at a
premium, the company says.
The Yellow Jacket U-shaped floor scale allows material handlers to capture the weight of standard and nonstandard pallets
and skids without removing the pallet jack. Operators can simply
move the pallet into place over the scale, lower the pallet jack
so the load is resting on the scale, capture the weight, and then
raise the pallet jack to easily move the pallet or skid to its next
location. This innovative scale reduces weighing times by eliminating the time-consuming step of pulling the pallet jack out
from underneath the pallet.
Unlike traditional floor scales that require either a ramp or pit,
the new scale allows for fast, easy, and cost-effective installation. It also features built-in handles, a portable wheel kit, and
quick-disconnect accessories, making it highly portable.
In applications where pallet jacks are primarily used to move
product, the OSHA-friendly Yellow Jacket U-shaped floor scale
can save hundreds of man-hours by eliminating the time required
to remove the pallet jack from the scale to capture the weight.
The scale has a 5,000-pound capacity and meets or exceeds the
National Institute of Standards and Technology’s specifications,
tolerances, and requirements for weighing devices. (Fairbanks
