enjoyed the numerous tabletop exhibits and the talks on
new technology opportunities
for energy curing.
Taylor Guitars, offered the end-user
perspective with “21st Century
Finishing, Taylor Style!” Vittorio
Belluz of DV Systems closed the
morning portion of the segment with
a talk on “Vacuum Coating.”
The afternoon session featured
talks on “Mist Coating/Roll Coating”
by Jim Arvin, DuBois Equipment.
Arvin was followed by Jennifer
Allison, Bayer MaterialScience, who
discussed “Accelerated Weathering
for Wood Coatings.”
Dan Davis and Matt Bell of ITW
Industrial Finishing closed the wood
finishing session with “Spraying UV.”
UV/EB Technology for Aerospace &
Defense Applications featured a wide
variety of topics. Robert Chiang
opened the session with “100% Solids
UV Curable Aircraft Topcoats.”
Chiang was followed by Todd Roper
of PPG Industries, whose topic was
“UV Curable Coatings for Rapid
Field Repair.” Min-Yi Shih or Shilpa
Pradhan, Physical Optics Corp., discussed “Flexible UV Light Curing
System.” Corey Bliss of the USAF
closed the morning session with “UV-
Curable Powder Coatings for
Military Applications; ESTCP
Project WP-0801.”
The afternoon session featured
“UV Cured Composite Repair,” presented by Michael Dvorchak, Bayer
MaterialScience, and “
Multi-functional UV-Curable Coatings for
DoD - SERDP Project WP-1519, by
Ben Curatolo, Light Curable
Coatings. Georgette Nelson,
Concurrent Technologies Corporation, discussed “UV-Curable
Coatings for Aerospace Applications -
ESTCP Project WP-0804.” Dvorchak
closed the session with “UV-Curable
Aircraft Stencils/Markings.”
UV/EB Curing for Industrial
Applications: Metal & Plastic
Coatings was also a popular session.
Michael Kelly of Allied PhotoChemical led off with “Sustainable
UV.” Kellly was followed by David
Hagood of Finishing Technology
Solutions, whose talk was “Case
Study 1: UV on Metal Canisters -
Spray - Bell Atomizer.” Dick Stowe of
Fusion UV discussed “UV Lamp
Configurations to Cure 3D Parts.”
Duncan Gamble of UVXchange then
discussed “Case Study 2: UV on Pipe
and Tubing - Spray - HVLP.” Gamble
was followed by Paul Weyandt of
Nordson Equipmnt, whose topic was
“Optimizing Energy Efficiency:
Timing Analysis of UV Curing
Equipment.”
Hagood returned in the afternoon
session with “How to Successfully
Implement a UV Project.” He was followed by Pat Peach of Red Spot Paint
&Varnish, whose topic was “Case
Study 3: No-VOC, UV Curable
Hardcoat for Exterior Architectural
Sheet.” Rory Wolf of Enercon talked
about “Improving Surface Bonding and
Curing of Cationic Inks by
Atmospheric Plasma,”followed by
Peter Weissman, Quaker Chemical,
whose talk was on “UV Curing on
Concrete Floors - Application Review.”
Doug DeLong of DDU ended the session with Maintaining Your UV Curing
Equipment.”
Outside of coatings, the graphic arts
were well represented, as there was an
extremely well attended morning session on photovoltaics (PV), as well as a
full-day session on inkjet.
Organizers and industry leaders
were delighted with the turnout and
participation at UV/EB West 2009.
“Given the current economic circumstances, we did quite well, and considering the concerns about energy and
the environment, there is a lot of
renewed interest in our technologies,”
said Gary Cohen, executive director of
RadTech International NA.
“In light of the present economy,
the content and engagement of the
participants has been outstanding,”
Idacavage concluded. “It’s been an
