Camera systems: Vitronic has introduced three new camera
systems to help speed up operations and reduce data capture
expenses for parcel logistics and warehouse and distribution
companies. According to the company, the Vicam snap! and
Vicam ssi2 speed up data capture processes, increase worker
productivity, and reduce logistics expenses per item. The third
system, the Volumec hd, is a three-dimensional volume-measure-ment system for cuboidal and irregularly shaped objects.
Both Vicam systems are suitable for optimizing data capture
processes that include handling of returns and inbound inspection, order picking, sorting, and outbound inspection. As different code types on packages are read automatically, all capture
processes are accelerated, cycle times are shortened, and the
logistics expenses per item are reduced.
The Vicam snap! matrix cameras are suitable for data capture
during manual package handling. The camera is installed above
the workstation. An operator manually moves the package
through the large reading field. The codes and data are captured
automatically and archived as images. Compared with handheld
scanners, the throughput is up to five times faster, thereby
eliminating the need for additional costly reading stations and
conveyor technology.
The Vicam ssi2 is an autofocus line-scan camera and provides
the best solution for automated data capture applications, the
company says. It provides the highest read rates for conveyor
speeds of up to 4. 5 m/s. In addition to reading linear bar codes
and two-dimensional codes, the Vitronic system provides state-of-the-art OCR for address and text reading on labels. The camera is
equipped with the latest-generation CMOS sensors for outstanding image quality. The Vicam ssi2 is designed to be energy efficient and consumes 50 percent less energy than other cameras.
The volume measurement system, Volumec hd, is certified for
trade, which allows for automatic invoicing and legally binding
revenue recovery, loading optimization, and parcel/package
defects detection. It is capable of throughput speeds of up to 3
m/s (600fpm) and can capture the measurements and contours
of the transported items for package sizes up to 100 inches long,
40 inches wide, and 40 inches high with a measurement accuracy
of 0.2 inches long, 0.2 inches wide, and 0.2 inches high. It can be
installed as a standalone dimensioning system or integrated into
the Vipac camera-based identification system. (Vitronic, www.

Solar panel solution: Thermo King’s new ThermoLite solar panel
solution is engineered to provide an alternative power source to
refrigerated and dry fleets. The solar panels enable Thermo King’s
Web-enabled temperature management system, TracKing, and
other telematics systems to monitor assets over long periods of
time, even when the transport refrigeration unit is off, while also
safeguarding the health of the battery, the company says.
ThermoLite’s charge controller technology is designed to
improve the charging from the solar array to the battery bank;
to eliminate concerns regarding electrical power surges, reverse
polarity (shock hazard), overcharging, and high-voltage jump
starting; and to withstand inclement weather conditions.
The ThermoLite solar panel solution includes three models:
ThermoLite 26W, 36W, and 100-300W. (Thermo King, www.

Integrated drive system: Siemens Industry Inc. has released new
combination motor/drive packages that allow OEMs or end-users
to select the optimal solution for a variety of heavy-duty industrial
motion control applications from a single source. Choosing from
a predetermined list of motor/drive combinations, the customer
simply makes the selection best suited to the application. The
motor and drive are packaged on a single pallet, shipped, and
invoiced together.
The motor and drive combinations
are power-matched for 480V high-over-load operation through a 20-horsepow-
er range, with protection from thermal
damage provided as standard in both the
motor and the drive components. The
Siemens Intelligent Operator Panel (IOP)
is included with these packages, allowing
easy step-by-step drive startup.
Application macros are provided in the Sinamics G120C drive
for easy installation and wiring; the terminals are pre-assigned at
the factory and the parameters are automatically set. The Simotics
SD100 motors are rugged cast-iron with inverter duty ratings in
a 4: 1 speed range for constant torque and 20: 1 speed range
for variable torque. Simotics SD100 units are severe-duty TEFC
motors that meet NEMA Premium efficiency. (Siemens, www.usa.
