Patent No. U.S. 7,259,206 B2
Nippon Paint Company has been
granted a patent for a waterborne resin
composition comprised of a
hydrolysable functional group and a
polymerizable unsaturated carbon
bond, wherein the waterborne resin
composition contains at least one
species selected from the group consisting of a polyamide-imide resin, a
polyamide resin and a polyimide resin
as a base resin, and wherein the
hydrolysable functional group is an
onium group.
BASF PATENTS
SOLVENTBORNE COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,261,926 B2
BASF Coatings AG has been granted
a patent for a solventborne coating
material that has an optical effect from
an effect pigment and is resistant to
clouding, the solventborne coating
material is comprised of at least one
binder curable by one of physically,
thermally or thermally and with actinic
radiation; at least one effect pigment or
a mixture of a color pigment and an
effect pigment, and at least one transparent or colorless powder present in
an amount of from 0.05-7.0% by
weight, based on the solids content of
the coating material, the powder being
substantially inert with respect to the
other constituents of the coating material and whose particles have average
size of from 3.0 to 7. 5 μm, a particle
size distribution such that the maximum particle size is below 10 μm, and
a density of from 1.25 to 3. 6 g cm- 3,
wherein the solventborne coating
material is curable by one of physically,
thermally or thermally and with
actinic radiation, and components are
present in a combination such that an
optical effect coating prepared from the
solventborne coating material does not
exhibit clouding.
RADIATION-CURABLE COATINGS
FOR PLASTIC SUBSTRATES
Patent No. U.S. 7,232,540 B2
Ashland Licensing and Intellectual
Property LLC has been granted a
patent for an article comprised of a
plastic substrate and a UV-curable
Michael resin composition, wherein
the UV-curable Michael resin composition is comprised of a resinous
Michael addition product of a β
-dicar-bonyl compound and a Lewis-function-al multifunctional acrylate ester
wherein the resin has a surface tension in the range of approximately 30
- 70 dynes/cm and wherein the plastic
substrate is coated with the UV-curable Michael resin composition.
DAIKIN INDUSTRIES PATENTS
THERMOSETTING POWDER COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,247,677 B2
Daikin Industries, Ltd. has
obtained a patent for a thermosetting
powder coating composition comprised
of a fluorine-containing copolymer and
a curing agent, in which the copolymer
contains, as essential structural units,
a fluoroolefin unit, an alkene unit and
p-tertiary butyl vinyl benzoate unit,
has the p-tertiary butyl vinyl benzoate
unit in an amount of from 5-20% by
mole, has a thermal transition temperature of from 45° to 120° C and has
a crosslinkable reaction group.
COATING COMPOSITIONS
FOR USE IN GOLF BALLS
Patent No. U.S. 7,247,697 B2
Acushnet Co. has received a patent
for a golf ball comprised of a core, a
cover layer encasing the core and at
least one coating layer encasing the
cover layer, wherein the coating layer is
formed of a two-part, reactive composition comprised of a first part comprised
of 5% or greater of a radiation-curable
iso(thio)cyanate, wherein each mole-
cule has at least one non-aromatic car-bon-carbon unsaturation; and a second
part comprised of at least one
iso(thio)cyanate-reactive chemical;
wherein the golf ball further comprises
at least one indicia layer adjoining the
coating layer, and wherein the indicia
layer is formed from an ink composition comprised of one or more radiation-curable moieties crosslinkable to
the radiation-curable iso(thio)cyanate
in the coating layer.
EFFECT PIGMENTS BASED

Patent No. U.S. 7,255,736 B2
Merck Patent GmbH has been
granted a patent for an effect pigment,
which is a silver-white effect pigment, a
colored interference pigment or an
effect pigment having a non-flake
appearance comprising an SiO2 flake
substrate having a thickness of from 50
nm to 150 nm, coated with only one
layer of a metal oxide, metal oxide
hydrate, metal suboxide, or metal fluoride or only one layer of a mixture of
two or more of these materials.
BIODEGRADABLE COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,256,250 B2
JVS-Polymers Oy, Espoo, Finland
has been granted a patent for a
biodegradable, curable structurally star
shaped polyester resin composition,
characterized in that the resin composition is based on hydroxy acid units
structural units derived from unsaturated difunctional monomers; structural units derived from polyol monomers
or polyacid monomers, the composition
being the polycondensation product of
60-99.8% mole of hydroxy acid
monomers, 0.1-39% mole of unsaturated difunctional monomers, and 0.1-15%
mole of polyol or polyacid monomers
and being curable through double
bonds. CW
