On April 8 The Metropolitan New York Paint
and Coatings Association (MNYPCA) and The
New York Society for Coatings Technology
(NYSCT) hosted the symposium, “Green Chemistry
for Coatings and Related Industries.” Held at the
Landmark in East Rutherford, NJ, and sponsored by
BYK USA, King Industries and D.B. Becker Co., the
one-day event explored the field of green coatings
technology from various perspectives. The symposium
examined this wave of the future and analyzed its
environmental culture, its economic concerns, the
accompanying regulatory issues, the requirements
for Green Seal certification, green raw materials, programs to implement green technology and the potential for green coatings.
The symposium began with, “What is Green
Chemistry,” presented by Michael Cann. A professor at
the Univesity of Scranton’s Chemistry Department and
researcher at the Green Chemistry Institute, Professor
Cann highlighted the ethos of green chemistry and its 12
principles. Professor Cann offered specific examples of
green chemistry from the winners of the prestigious
Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards.
Next, Christine Chase presented, “Green Seal Certification.”
As the lead scientist for the GS- 11 Paint Revision as well as
numerous other projects at Green Seal, Inc., Chase discussed
environmental standards, their development and importance
with an analysis of current regulations and their relationship
to the environmental standards. Chase also gave an in depth
look at Green Seal’s paint standards and explained the Green
Seal certification process.
Mark Ingle addressed the audience next about the Navy
and green technology in, “NAVSEA and Green Chemistry.”
As the senior coatings engineer in the Naval Sea Systems
Michael Cann of the University of Scranton’s Chemistry
Department addresses green chemistry as it pertains to
antifoulant coatings technology.
Green Seal’s Christine Chase talks about the importance of
environmental standards in the coatings industry.
