Mark Ingle of NAVSEA highlights green coatings systems currently
used by the Navy on its warships.
Benjamin Moore’s James Rayball talked about the green framework
within which coatings manufacturers currently operate.
Command, Engineering Directorate, Coatings and Corrosion
Control Branch, Ingle is responsible for coating environmental compliance. He discussed NAVSEA efforts to reformulate
coatings to reduce solvent content and the environmental,
pollution reduction and econonomic benefits. He also presented the NAVSEA and Naval Research Laboratory development of new, solvent-free coating systems.
James Rayball, with Benjamin Moore’s Product Group, then
emphasized a paint manufacturer’s point of view on green coatings in, “Green Coatings in a Mature Industry.” He discussed
formulating and marketing green coatings in the mature architectural coatings industry. He also talked about the green
framework within which coatings manufacturers currently
operate, providing an overview of the current state of green
technology and a look ahead to future technology.
William Woods, manager of business development, biocides, at International Specialty Products (ISP), discussed the latest advances in biocides technology in,
“Green Biocides.” Woods talked about alternative fungicide and biocide technology he developed at ISP based on
green chemistry and green engineering.
Burl Bowman then presented, “Environmental Iron
Oxide Pigments.” Involved in the areas of production, quality control, environmental health and safety, and sales at
Hoover Color for more than 22 years, he presented his findings on Hoover’s group of pigments known as
Environoxides including their origin, production, environmental clean-up sites, their impact on waterways and the
uses of the pigments to attain LEED credits.
After dinner, Stewart Williams, technical director with
the Rohm & Haas Paint Quality Institute, presented,
“Sustainability—What’s the Big Fuss?” Williams concluded
the evening with a talk on one of the key factors in
GreenTech—sustainable development. In response to the
growing public awareness of the dangers to the enviorn-ment, which is driving suppliers and manufacturers to analyze the coatings value chain and deliver solutions for the
global good, Williams explored this opportunity for innovation and the acceleration of new product introductions
through the method of Lifecycle Thinking. CW
ISP’s William Woods discusses the three integral elements of
environmental stewardship.
Burl Bowman gives an example of Hoover’s Environoxides being
put to use in the field.
