Presidential ‘Aura’ at Sasha Bruce House
On January 19th, the day before being sworn in as the 44th
President of the United States, then President-elect
Obama celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and
visited the Sasha Bruce House Shelter in Washington, D.C.
Declared by Obama to be a National Day of Service, he spoke with
staff and clients and took up a paintbrush.
Declared by Obama to be a National Day of Service,
the President-elect called on all Americans to work hard
in service to others, and he demonstrated this work
ethic by helping to paint the bedroom for the shelter’s
runaway youth. Several formerly homeless teens stood
shoulder-to-shoulder with the President-elect.
He told a Washington Post reporter: “I think [Sasha
Bruce House] is an example… These young people have a
huge potential… Given the crisis we’re in and the hardships so many people are going through, we can’t allow any
idle hands. Everybody’s going to have to be involved.
Everybody’s going to have to pitch in.”
The President-elect rolled onto the walls of the shelter

Benjamin Moore Aura paint was what the world saw President-elect Barack Obama using during his pre-inaugural Day of Service
visit to the Sasha Bruce House, a shelter for teens, in D.C. Dressed for work in jeans and rolled-up sleeves, Obama helped other
volunteers roll on Laguna Blue 2059-30 and Yosemite Blue 2059-40 that were provided by Frager’s Hardware, a Benjamin Moore
retailer and a Capitol Hill institution since 1920. Aura was specifically chosen for its environmentally friendly quality.
