U.S. 8,546,477 B2
Dow Global Technologies has received
a patent for a process for producing a
coating composition comprised of the
steps of providing 10 to 55 percent by
weight of an ethylene based copolymer
composition comprise of an ethylene-ole-
fin copolymer; providing 5 to 25 percent
by weight of a propylene polymer com-
position comprised of a propylene-olefin
copolymer having a melt flow rate of 0.1
to 150 g/10 minutes, measured at 230° C
and 2.16 Kg weight, a melting point in the
range of from 130 to 180° C and a melt
strength in the range of 5 cN to 50 cN;
providing 15 to 60 percent by weight of
a chlorinated polyethylene; providing less
than 40 percent by weight of a filler; pro-
viding 1 to 20 weight percent by weight
of an adhesion promoting agent com-
prised of an acid or acid derivative func-
tionalized polyolefin; providing 0.1 to 10
percent by weight of one or more scratch
mar resistance agents; melt blending the
ethylene-based copolymer composition,
the propylene polymer composition, the
chlorinated olefin polymer composition,
the filler, the adhesion promoting agent,
and the one or more scratch mar resis-
tance agents; producing the coating.

Guardian Industries Patents
Titanium Dioxide Coatings
U.S. 8,545,899 B2
Guardian Industries Corp. has been
awarded a patent for a method of forming an anatase titanium dioxide coating
having a roughened surface on a substrate comprised of preparing a TiO2 sol-gel composition; adding colloidal silica
particles to the composition to form a
combined TiO2 and colloidal silica sol-gel composition, wherein the colloidal
silica particles have an average particle
size of 70 nm to 100 nm; coating the substrate with the combined sol-gel composition; and heating the coated substrate at
a temp. from 550° C to 650° C to form
a surface roughened anatase titanium dioxide coating; wherein the surface roughened TiO2 coating has a mean square
roughness from 8 nm to 12 nm; and the
combined TiO2 and colloidal silica sol-gel composition comprises colloidal silica
in an amount less than or equal to 20 percent weight relative to a total weight of
the sol-gel composition. CW

Reactive Surfaces Expands Patent Protection in the Middle East
for Self-Decontaminating Adhesives and Sealants
Reactive Surfaces has been granted an Israeli patent covering adhesives functionalized with enzymatic additives. The adhesives are capable of detoxifying organophos-phorus nerve weapons and pesticides. It has also been granted an Israeli patent
covering sealants that are functionalized with its OPDtox additives resulting in rapid
nerve weapon detoxification from contaminated vehicles, buildings, and electronics
used by warfighters. A significant issue in military decontamination arises as a result of
being unable to prevent the creep of nerve agents through joints, channels, windows
and glass coverings on electronics. See, http://www.coatingsworld.com/issues/0713/
