As we wrap up this month’s issue, the Coatings World team is busy making the final preparations to attend CHINACOAT2014. CHINACOAT isanannual eventalternating between Guangzhou
and Shanghai. This year CHINACOAT will be held December 3-5 at the
China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. CHINACOAT has
become one of the most important shows for Coatings World to attend.
This issue has three separate features dedicated to the Chinese paint and
coatings market.
Contributing writer, Dan Watson examines the current state of the
Chinese economy in his article “China – Investor Chaos or Opportunity?”
(pg. 47). In this article Watson examines the instability that has been part of
China’s economic climate. Watson observes that “for the past couple of de-
cades we have seen thousands of foreign companies rushing into China to
make an investment, assume the risk of that investment in order to become
a part of China’s future. For some that has proven to be a wise decision
while for others it didn’t turn out exactly as planned. Today, China is the
second largest economy on the globe with a lot of experts predicting that it
will surpass the U.S. in the next few years. It has enjoyed an unprecedented
growth of its GDP over the past two or three decades. So, with that thought
in mind, the question posed by this article is simply considering everything
that is happening in the world today is China still the land of opportunity,
is it still worth the assumption of country risk by future investors?”
China correspondent Arnold Wang’s (pg. 52) article, “China Coatings
Industry Speeds Up Adjustment,” takes a look at the key trends shaping the
market for paint and coatings in China. According to Wang, water-based
coatings will expand market share in China over the coming years.
If you are planning on attending CHINACOAT, our CHINACOAT
Preview (page 54) will give you an excellent starting point for getting yourself organized.
As this issue went to press, CHINACOAT2014 currently had a total
of 898 direct exhibitors, comprised of 675 from China, 45 from Hong
Kong and Taiwan regions and 178 from overseas, representing 26 different
countries. Overall, 974 companies will be represented. This year’s event
attracted 183 new exhibitors, comprised of 149 from China, 5 from Hong
Kong and Taiwan regions and 29 from overseas.
