AC CONFERENCE
Energy in the Focus
˜ On Monday, April 7, 2014, the day
before the American Coatings SHOW
begins, the ACC will present the latest
developments and trends in the field of
coatings technology. Participants can
look forward to 16 sessions featuring
96 outstanding presentations by top-
tier representatives of the industry and
academia.
The program committee of the American Coatings CONFERENCE selected the
finest of nearly 200 submissions to create an excellent line-up of presentations
about today’s most critical topics. As in
previous years, four parallel sessions will
be held on each day of the conference. After the plenary session, Monday will start
off with four main themes: the session

State-of-the-Art Cutting-Edge
Insights from Research
THE AMERICAN COATINGS CONFERENCE (ACC) OFFERS AN OVERVIEW OF TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS
offers a look at current coatings-relevant
university research. In the “Biobased
Coatings” session, one of the speakers
will be John Willhite from Nuplex Resins,
discussing “Biobased Waterborne Floor
Coatings with Enhanced Flow and Appearance.” Marc Nichols of Ford Motor
Company will cover “Statistical Modeling
of Coating Lifetimes in Disparate Environments” in “Measuring & Testing.” Another session in the afternoon will focus
on the issue of pigments. That evening,
a full-poster session will be held at the
after-work reception. Over 20 posters on
different topics from both the industry
and academia will be on display at this
informal event.
On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, the entire
day will be dedicated to important top-
ics such as architectural coatings, poly-
urethanes and protective coatings. There
will be a session on these topics both in
the morning and afternoon. The events
will be complemented by further ses-
sions on “Novel Materials” and “Radia-
tion Curing.”
On Wednesday, participants can look
forward to several key topics such as
“Nanotechnology” and “Functional &
Smart Materials.” In the latter session,
Weihua Marshall Ming from Georgia
Southern University will present “Acrylic
The ACC will
offer an excellent
line-up of presentations about
today’s most
critical topics.
˜ The American Coatings CONFERENCE
will kick off with a keynote presentation given by Charles F. Kahle, II, chief
technology officer and vice president,
Coatings R&D at PPG.
In a world where material resource constraints drive a cascade of decisions that
affect our research portfolios and our
future, the greatest challenge facing the
coatings industry is innovating to meet
the demands of a dynamic and constant-ly-evolving marketplace.
Starting with a wide lens on the future,
Dr. Kahle’s address will explore the usual
technology drivers that are shaping cur-
rent coatings technology innovation
such as end-user requirements, broader
sustainability demands, and critical en-
vironmental considerations. From this
baseline, the address will “drill down”
to explore the dynamic changes driven
by energy cost and availability, and how
these changes are shaping the future of
coatings technology. From the price of
oil and the need for greater energy ef-
ficiency for our customers, to the role of
shale gas and fracking technology on
raw material supplies, to bio-based raw
materials and new pathways for critical
feedstocks, “the changing energy profile
has everything up for debate” in the coat-
ings industry’s drive to innovate.
Service Features
Those attending the American Coatings
SHOW 2014 in Atlanta can look forward
to a new service: a shuttle bus to trans-
port guests to and from the nine ACS
hotels every 15-20 min. (see page 20 for
information on booking a room at par-
ticipating hotels).
Once at the show, it will also be very
easy to get around using the “ACS 2014”
app, which includes a state-of-the-art
interactive floor plan. Visitors can use it
to find the exact location of exhibitors or
product groups.

Coatings AWARD
PAPER ON DISTRIBUTION OF TIO2 CONVINCED THE COMMITTEE
One of the highlights of the American
Coatings CONFERENCE is the American
Coatings AWARD, given for the most
outstanding conference paper. The best
paper is selected by the chairpersons of
the conference sessions and the Ameri-
can Coatings Conference Program Com-
mittee, and is bestowed by the Ameri-
can Coatings Association (ACA) and
Vincentz Network (VN). Presented
during the opening ceremony of the
American Coatings Conference on
April 7, 2014, the recipient of this pres-
tigious honor will receive $2,500 and a
commemorative sculpture. Working in
conjunction with the National Institute
of Standards and Technology (NIST),
Dr. Antony van Dyk of Dow Coating Ma-
terials and Dr. Alan Nakatani of The Dow
Chemical company won the 2012 Ameri-
can Coatings AWARD for their basic re-
search into a method of measuring the
distribution of titanium dioxide in slur-
ries and grinds – analysis that promises
to help paint manufacturers reduce the
cost of their products by optimizing per-
formance of paint coverage.
