H Most of the exhibitors at the American Coatings SHO W are familiar faces
and are recurring attendees. However,
this year, there are some new exhibitors participating for the first time. We
asked four first-time exhibitors about
their show expectations.

INTRODUCING NEWCOMERS
CARLOS JORQUERA,
Chief Technology and Executive Officer
Boulder Imaging
“Boulder Imaging has three primary
goals: networking with industry colleagues, learning more about trends
and challenges in inspection, and broadcasting the news of Boulder Imaging’s
transformational technology in one of
the industry’s best venues. Many attendees will be investigating ways to ensure
their surface inspection techniques keep
pace with the increasing sophistication
of coatings and precision manufacturing.
As a first-time exhibitor that means Boulder Imaging will have a unique opportunity to find an audience for our story of how
inspection speed and accuracy can now
be achieved simultaneously, and how
operating performance and customer
satisfaction are immediate benefactors.
The coatings industry places a premium
on effective new technology, so we look
forward to performing equipment demonstrations in our booth of our revolutionary machine vision products.”
SHANE STEELMAN,
Marketing and Sales Director North America
Vencorex
“Vencorex is a newly formed JV between
PTT Global Chemical and the Perstorp
Group and therefore first-time exhibitor,
but we are not new at the American Coatings SHOW. We have participated several
times before as Perstorp. Our products
are well known in the market. For Ven-corex, the American Coatings SHOW is
the most important event to reach out to
the North American Market. We expect

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF AUTOMOTIVE PAINTING IS BEING REDUCED
Mark Nichols,
Ford Motor
Company
H According to Mark Nichols, the
environmental impact of automotive
painting is clearly being reduced.
The Technical Leader Paint Research,
Materials Research Department at Ford
Motor Company comments on drivers
and trends in automotive coating.
its of waterborne versus solventborne
basecoats is an interesting example of
the challenges associated with defining
how “green” a given technology is.
How significant are new functionalities
for automotive coatings?
Mark Nichols: We are always thinking
about ways to enhance the value of auto-
motive coatings beyond appearance and
protection, and lots of interesting func-
tionalities (self-cleaning, self-healing,
color responsiveness…) are percolating
at labs around the world. Our challenge
is how to transition those enhancements
from the laboratory to mass production at
a reasonable cost, while not impacting the
traditional performance of the coating.
What do you consider the key drivers
for automotive coatings?
Mark Nichols: At Ford, we believe that
delivering improved coating performance
while reducing the environmental impact
of automotive painting is the key challenge facing the automotive coatings
community. To sustainably deliver on
those goals requires that the solutions to
those challenges be economically viable
to us and deliver value to our customers,
who clearly want the most durable, colorful coatings on their vehicles.
How far have “green” trends and demands
made inroads in automotive coatings?
Mark Nichols: The environmental impact
of automotive painting is clearly being
reduced through the continued imple-
mentation of “compact” paint processes
around the globe, which reduces the CO2
and VOC emissions from painting. The on-
going discussion about the relative mer-
to meet both existing and new custom-
ers, reminding and showing how we can
provide them with a wide range of isocy-
anates and coating solutions, as well as
help them to develop more environmen-
tally-friendly technologies.
BRADEN TELESZ,
National Account Manager Paint,
Rehrig Pacific Company
“We expect to make connections with
key, potential trading partners that are
seeking innovative, sustainable packaging solutions throughout their supply chain. Our goal with this show as
a first time attendee is to build brand
awareness of Rehrig Pacific Company
solutions while understanding how we
can help the American Coatings Association’s members meet their objectives
of increased sales with a lower total cost
of ownership. Rehrig Pacific Company’s
innovative rigid and reusable packaging
solutions are paving the way for the retail growth predicted in this industry.”
PAUL M. CORDFUNKE,
Senior Market Manager Chemical Industry
Corbion Purac
“The American Coatings SHO W is a recognized international platform in the coatings
industry. Therefore, the ACS is the perfect
event to launch our proposition on Lactide
as a polyester resin monomer/building
block for industrial and architectural coatings to a broad audience in the coating
industry. We expect a very good match
between the visitors of the show and our
propositions, by combining their interest in sustainable performance coating
resin technology with our offering. Our bio-based building block, Lactide, can improve
the properties of both resin and coatings,
while reducing the CO2 footprint. Incorporation of Lactide in polyester coating resins
provides significant lower resin viscosity, enabling high solid formulations, with
similar or improved coating performance.”
