“Large Coalescent Demand
for Film Formation”
POLYURETHANE COATINGS ARE BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE
H Not only must the sustainability
of the raw materials for polyurethane
coatings be ensured, but sustainability is also critical for film formation,
even at low VOC levels, says Anthony
Perkins of Lubrizol.
How do you improve the sustainability
factor for polyurethane coatings?
Anthony Perkins: For polyurethanes
there are multiple avenues for improving
their sustainability as coatings in terms
of raw material usage and lowering VOC
of the product manufactured, as well as
for the formulated application. Improve-
ments can also be made in energy usage
for manufacturing polyurethane coating;
however, this might be more limited due
to typical processing requirements and is
also more difficult to demonstrate.
How far have PU raw materials come in
terms of sustainability?
Anthony Perkins: The use of sustainable
raw materials in polyurethane coatings
has been around for a number of years
in the form of vegetable oil modification
of polyurethanes or alkyd functional
polyurethanes. These were initially introduced as solvent-borne systems but
can also now be commonly found as waterborne systems, which would provide
further sustainability, depending on the
cosolvents used in their manufacture or
required for film formation. Renewable
content of oil modified polyurethanes
can vary greatly but can be around 50
percent or higher on a polymers solids
basis, speaking from experience as we
market these types of products. Besides
natural oil-based polyols, one can now
obtain polyols based on raw materials
that are renewable; this is particularly
true for polyesters, which can be made
using diols and di-acids that are renew-ably sourced. A limiting factor for the
amount of sustainable raw materials
which can currently be used in the manu-

facture of polyurethanes is that certain
raw materials are not currently avail-
able in a renewable form, in particular
the polyisocyanates. Although there are
initiatives to introduce polyisocyanates
that are in part based on renewable raw
materials, presently one might expect
these specialty isocyanates to be rela-
tively expensive.
What are the sustainability challenges
for PU coatings?
Anthony Perkins: Improving the sustainability of polyurethanes by lowering the
VOC levels, both as supplied and required for a film forming formulation, can
be accomplished with high or 100 percent
solids, as well as water-borne products.
However, one needs to be cognizant of
any solvents used in the manufacture of
the polyurethane required for its success-
ful application. This is particularly true of
water-borne polyurethanes, which early
in their development came supplied with
significant cosolvent content used in the
manufacturing process, but today can be
obtained as cosolvent-free dispersions.
Although low VOC water-borne polyure-
thanes are readily available, many have a
large coalescent demand for film forma-
tion, which is particularly true for harder
performance based coatings. Being
able to form films at lower temperatures
would further improve sustainability.
Using innovative design, its possible to
make a high-performance polyurethane
coating with low cosolvent demand at ap-
plication temperature of 20° C or lower.

overview of the show and conference,
and provides helpful information for
exhibitors, visitors and journalists.
The ACS website informs you about the
show and the conference before the event
starts. It gives you useful information, a
clearly arranged map of exhibitors, their
products and technologies, and answers
to frequently asked questions regarding
the exhibitors and the conference. You
may also review highlights of the American Coatings SHOW 2012 on video. All in
all, the website is a useful and basic tool
which informs you before, during and
even after the ACS 2014.
