Axalta Coating Systems recently set up shop in Long Beach, California at Universal Technical Institute (UTI) for its 5th Annual Winter Panel Jam. More than 30 notable automotive art- ists and pinstripers amazed UTI students and others with their creativity and original artwork. Participating artists competed to have their artwork named “best-in-show” by the students.
The creator of the winning piece, Alberto Herrera from Visalia, California, was awarded a “We
Paint Winners” Radiant Red Commemorative SATAjet 5000 B spray gun.
The Winter Panel Jam attracted artists who specialize in custom pattern work, airbrushed murals, gold leaf and pinstriping-techniques that are often passed down from one generation to the
next or learned from each other. The artists used Axalta’s Cromax basecoats and clearcoats, and
Hot Hues candy dyes and pinstripe colors to create custom art on hoods, miniature car bodies,
pedal cars and more.
“Events like this one bring together groups of talented artists to collaborate, learn from and
teach each other and ultimately create some fantastic art that Axalta will display at custom car
shows across the country throughout the year,” said Harry Christman, Axalta Cromax brand manager. “We’re happy to give students from around the state of California an opportunity to connect with the industry’s best. Today,
we have artists here from as far away as New York and Japan. We work with UTI to celebrate our growing relationship, help promote the school’s capabilities and to expose their students to this very unique aspect of automotive paint.”
