X-black reflects the sun’s near
infrared light energy and lowers
surface temperatures significant-
ly compared to a house paint of
the same color.
According to Product Manager,
Rankin Jays, this energy-saving coat-
ing works well even in medium and
darker colors. StoCoat X-black also
minimizes color fading eliminating the
need for frequent repainting. It can be
applied on most claddings, including
EIFS, stucco, concrete, wood, brick, or
pre-painted surfaces, and is available in
570 colors.
PPG Introduces Ultrapax
Packaged Coatings System
for Metal Substrates
PPG Industries’ industrial coatings
business has introduced the Ultrapax
coatings system, a packaged system
of pretreatment products and powder
coatings engineered together to meet
stringent standards for the protection of
metal substrates.
The UltraPax system enables manufacturers in a variety of industries – such
as auto parts and accessories, appliances, architectural products, heavy-duty
equipment and transportation – to purchase pretreatment products and powder

coatings in a single package customized
to their specific performance and appearance requirements.
PPG manufactures a full array of
effective, economical pretreatment
products such as zinc and phosphate
sprays and immersion solutions,
multi-metal cleaners, low-temperature
cleaners and phosphates, and state-of-the-art thin-film zirconium pretreatments. In the UltraPax system,
pretreatment products are paired with
Envirocron powder coatings by PPG,
according to the company. Available in
more than 300,000 digitally-matched
colors, Envirocron coatings are formulated with polyester-, urethane-,
epoxy- and hybrid-based resin systems
to provide hardness and abrasion resistance. Envirocron powder coatings
also help manufacturers meet environmental regulations because they are
made without solvents and therefore
emit virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Sherwin-Williams Launches
Styrene-Free Vinyl Ester for
Severe Chemical Resistance
Sherwin-Williams Protective and
Marine Coatings has launched
Magnalux 404 FF, the first styrene-free vinyl ester for use with steel and
concrete substrates in the oil and gas
market. The new coating is specially
formulated to combat immersion and
containment service corrosion caused
by contact with aggressive chemicals
such as aromatic solvents, hi-aromat-ic gasoline, ethanol gasohol, MTBE,
ETBE, TAME and ether/fuel blends.
Magnalux 404 FF is a low-VOC
(<15g/L), flake-filled, chemically resistant
premium tank lining that offers improved
chemical and temperature resistance.
Flakes, made of a crystalline form of iron
oxide, provide improved edge protection
and abrasion resistance. The flakes create
a physical barrier that resists corrosion
from fluid migration.
Because Magnalux 404 FF is styrene-free, it will not shrink and pungent odors
are nearly eliminated. The 100 percent
solids product can also be applied in
one coat and still achieve the correct

thickness. It will cure tack-free without a
wax solution, allowing for one less step
in the application process and making the
cleaning process even simpler, according
to the company.
Sherwin-Williams Protective
and Marine Coatings
Launches Envirolastic 980
PA
Sherwin-Williams Protective and
Marine Coatings has launched
Envirolastic 980 PA, an advanced high-build polyaspartic urethane coating
delivering rapid return to service and
one-coat exterior durability.
According to the company, because
of its high-build properties, Envirolastic
980 PA eliminates the need for the two-coat application over a zinc-rich primer
that has been the industry standard for
decades. Performance requirements can
be achieved without the intermediate
coat. In addition, the product offers
curing even in low or humid temperatures, abrasion and corrosion resistance, and high gloss retention. Up to
9 mils dry film thickness is possible in
just one pass.
The coating dries to touch in 30
minutes and an asset can be returned
to service in two hours when applied
at 77 F ( 25 C). This compares to the
more typical two coats that require
two eight-hour worker shifts with
significant nonproductive time in between coats, and return to service
times that vary widely with the environment in which it is being applied.
Envirolastic 980 PA is also suitable for
use on sports facilities and other high-visibility structures.
