RPM International Inc. is a multinational holding company with subsidiaries that manufacture and market high-perfor- mance coatings, sealants and specialty chemicals, primarily
for maintenance, repair and improvement applications. The company employs approximately 10,000 people and has 82 facilities
in 20 countries. In fiscal 2012, the company’s industrial products
accounted for 67 percent of its total coating sales, with consumer
products representing 33 percent. The Industrial segment’s operating groups include RPM Building Solutions Group, which provides
roofing systems, sealants and concrete admixtures. Leading brands
include Tremco, Tremco Illbruck and Euco.
RPM Performance Coatings Group includes polymer floor coatings, corrosion control coatings and fiberglass reinforced plastic
grating. Its primary brands include Stonhard, Carboline and Fiber-grate. RPM II Group offers specialty chemicals, exterior insulation
and finish systems and recreational marine coatings. Major brands
include Day-Glo, Dryvit, Kop-Coat and Pettit. RPM’s consumer
products are sold primarily in North America and have a growing
presence in Europe, predominantly in the UK.
The Consumer segment’s operating groups include Rust-Oleum
Group, which provides rust-preventative and small project paints,
primer-sealers, wallcovering preparation and removal products,
wood stains and finishes, mildew resistant paints and hobbyist products. Major brands include Rust-Oleum, Zinsser, Varathane and
Testors. DAP Group markets caulks, sealants and patch and repair
products under the DAP brand.
Most recently RPM launched, for the consumer segment, Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations, Rust-Oleum Leak Seal, Liquid
Elements Designer Seamless Flooring, DAP 3.0 Caulks, Sealants and
Patch and Repair Products.
RPM made several significant acquisitions in 2012. Its Rust-Oleum Group acquired Synta Inc., a producer and marketer of innovative exterior wood deck and concrete restoration systems. Based
in Clarkston, GA, Synta’s annual sales are anticipated to exceed $40
million in the first year. RPM acquired Kirker Enterprises, Inc., a
leading manufacturer of nail care enamels, coatings components and
related products for the personal care industry. Based in Paterson,
NJ, Kirker has annual sales in excess of $100 million.
RPM also acquired Viapol Ltda., a leading Brazilian manufac-
turer and marketer of building materials and construction products.
Based in Cacapava, Brazil, near Sao Paulo, Viapol has annual sales
of approximately $85 million. Terms of the transaction, which is
expected to be accretive to earnings after year one, were not dis-
closed. Viapol, which was founded in 1990, will become part of The
Euclid Chemical Group, a unit of RPM’s Building Solutions Group
that serves construction and rehabilitation markets worldwide.
Viapol’s products include rolled asphalt roofing materials, water-
proofing products, concrete admixtures, industrial epoxy flooring
systems, structural recovery products, and retail paints, varnishes
and stains.
