dustry,” said Robert Wendoll, di-
rector of environmental affairs
for Dunn-Edwards. “For
decades, Dunn-Edwards has
been an industry leader in reducing or
eliminating harmful ingredients from our
paints, and our new manufacturing facil-
ity is the world’s first with LEED Gold
Certification from the U.S. Green Build-
ing Council. In this pilot project, we sup-
port the idea that the people who design,
construct and occupy the built environ-
ment have a right to know about the
health, safety and environmental impacts
of building materials.”
The program is being administered by
the HPD Working Group, a volunteer or-
ganization composed of experts from the
community of designers, specifiers and
building owner/operators who authored
the draft HPD open standard format,
which made its debut at Greenbuild 2011.
Specialty Coating Systems
granted AS9100C certification
Specialty Coating Systems (SCS) has
achieved AS9100 Revision C certification
for its parylene coating service centers in
California, Indiana, New Hampshire and
Wisconsin. Additionally, the company is
now listed in the OASIS supplier database,
a recognized source for suppliers to the
aerospace industry.

from General Motors,” said Engel.
“Working together with forward-looking,
visionary customers like GM, BASF will

BASF’s coatings division supports GM
by combining modern paint processes
with special effect pigments and tech-
nologies. BASF offers a broad array of
color solutions and development capabil-
ities that help carmakers improve produc-
tivity and environmental performance.
For example, BASF recently introduced the environmentally friendly
CathoGuard 800 and 900 product line, a
cathodic e-coating system that provides
the base for automotive surfaces and
protects edges and cavities from corrosion said the company.
“The Supplier of the Year award winners’ partnership, dedication and commitment to consistently perform above
expectations played an important role in
GM’s success in 2011,” said Bob Socia,
vice president, global purchasing and supply chain. “In 2012, we will continue to
improve supplier relations to achieve a
world class supply chain focused on quality, capacity management and total cost.”
GM’s Supplier of the Year program
began in 1992, and each year a global
team of purchasing, engineering, quality,
manufacturing and logistics executives determine the winners of the Supplier of the
Year Award. Winners represent “World
Class” performance leaders in the areas of
quality, technology, price and service.
Jotun opens its manufacturing
facility for decorative paints,
tinters and fillers at Sandefjord
Jotun’s new paint production facility at
Vindal in Sandefjord has officially opened.
The new 13,000 square meter factory
will serve the Scandinavian market with
as much as 80 million liters of paint per
year. At a cost of about $86 million (NOK
500 million), the factory represents
Jotun’s largest investment to date.
The new factory replaces production
at Jotun’s existing facility in Sandefjord,
and will manufacture all of Jotun’s decorative paints, tinters and fillers for
Scandinavia. Moreover, all production of
coatings for industry and shipping will
be moved to the company’s facility in
Flixborough, England.
Employing approximately 240 people,
the new facility will enable important im-
provements and efficiency gains for Jotun
in Norway, including:
• A projected reduction of 80 percent
in CO2 emissions from internal
transportation;
• New production which enables a reduction in use of solvents and use of
less hazardous chemicals;
• Waste reduction due to the application of new technology;
• and recycling of waste instead of
disposal; and
•show a reduction in energy con-
sumption of 50 percent
“The Vindal facility is among the
world’s most modern paint factories, and
we are very proud to have this built in our
historical home city of Sandefjord,” said
Morten Fon, Jotun’s president and CEO, at
the opening ceremony. “The new facility
