Fresh Paint
process is simple. When a customer
brings a vehicle into a bodyshop for
repair, the repair specialist can easily
match the vehicle’s color and spray it
onto an adhesive vinyl sheet while carrying out the repair job. After adding a
clearcoat to the vinyl sheet and then cutting it into specific shapes, the customer
is given a DIY repair system which can
later be applied to any damaged or vulnerable areas. The system, which is sold
in a specially developed transparent
package of A5 (half-page) sheets, can also
be produced in standard colors and sold
over-the-counter at the dealer service
department.
INTERNATIONAL PAINT SUPPORTS
ZPMC TO BUILD SAN FRANCISCO’S
OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE
AkzoNobel protective coatings supplied
by the company’s International Paint
Protective Coatings business will be
used to paint the 45,000-ton steel struc-
tures being used for the new east span of
San Francisco’s Oakland Bay Bridge, to
be built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy
Industry Co., Ltd (ZPMC). The first
batch of steel structures were fabricated
and coated in Shanghai and shipped to
San Francisco on December 29, 2009.
The self-anchored suspension bridge has
a number of state-of-the-art seismic safe-
ty features that are the first to ever be
used in bridge construction. The bridge’s
west span has already undergone a sig-
nificant seismic retrofit, while the east
span on the Oakland side is being com-
pletely replaced. In concurrence with the
California Department of Trans-
portation, ZPMC chose International
Paint protective coatings because they
are manufactured with the same quality
standards in all of their 20 worldwide
locations. A total of 100,000 gallons of
Interzinc 22 Inorganic Zinc Rich Silicate
and Interfine 979 Acrylic Polysiloxane
will be used in the project to provide
anti-corrosion, abrasion, impact-resist-
ance, and gloss and color-retention pro-
tection. The coatings meet California’s
rigorous building requirements and will
extend the performance life-cycle of the
bridge, providing further savings on long
term maintenance costs.
DR. WILLIE LAU TO DELIVER 2010
MATTIELLO MEMORIAL LECTURE AT
AMERICAN COATINGS CONFERENCE
Dr. Willie Lau, scientist with Dow
Construction Chemicals of The Dow
Chemical Company, will deliver the
Mattiello Memorial Lecture on Tuesday,
April 13 at 9:00 am, on the second day of
the American Coatings Conference, in
Charlotte, NC. Dr. Lau’s lecture, entitled
“Frontier in Emulsion Polymerization
for Coatings,” will explore the recent
development of polymer systems
derived from the emulsion polymeriza-
tion technology based on cyclodextrin as
a phase transport catalyst. The technol-
ogy delivers polymer compositions and
molecular weight ranges not assessable
by conventional processes with unique
performance attributes. The use of cat-
alytic level of cyclodextrin allows the
incorporation of hydrophobic monomers
or chain transfer agents by emulsion
polymerization. The hydrophobic compo-
sitions provide superior water resist-
ance properties as well as adhesion to
hydrophobic surfaces. An example is an
elastomeric roofing coatings binder
product that has good water resistance
and adhesion to modified bitumen roof-
ing substrate. To exploit the unique
property balances of controlled struc-
ture polymers as a practical approach
for coatings applications, Dr. Lau devel-
oped emulsion polymerization methods
in producing hardsoft segmental graft-
ing copolymers that can be adapted to
conventional manufacturing facilities.
To gain an in-depth understanding of
emulsion polymerization kinetics, Dr.
Lau used Electron Spin Resonance
Spectroscopy to carry out direct meas-
urements of the time evolution of radical
concentrations in semi-continuous
emulsion polymerization systems. Dr.
Lau’s innovative research achievements
have contributed to the subjects of sev-
eral dissertations and classroom studies
in academic institutions.
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS BUYS
ITALIAN WOOD COATINGS BUSINESS
Sherwin-Williams has agreed to purchase an Italian wood coatings business
that sells products under the Sayerlack
brand. Sayerlack Industrial Wood
Coatings makes industrial wood stains
and finishes for use in the furniture and
cabinets industry. The business is currently a division of Pianoro, Italy-based
Arch Chemicals, Inc. The division had
net sales of $147 million in 2009, according to Sherwin-Williams. Founded in
1954, Sayerlack is one of the largest
wood coating manufacturers in Europe.
The company has manufacturing sites
across Western Europe and has sales,
technical and distribution staff in the
U.S. and Asia. Sherwin-Williams said the
acquisition will increase the company’s
global presence and allow it to better
serve its international clients. Sayerlack
will join Sherwin’s global chemical coatings division. The division acquired
Singapore-based Inchem and Swedish
Becker Powder Coatings in 2008.
RUST-OLEUM ACQUIRES DUTCH
SPECIALTY COATINGS COMPANY
RPM International Inc. announced that
its subsidiary, Rust-Oleum Corporation,
has acquired Chemtec Chemicals BV, a
manufacturer of industrial cleaners and
specialty coatings based in the
Netherlands. Terms of the transaction,
which is expected to be accretive to earnings within one year, were not disclosed.
Headquartered in Rotterdam, Chemtec
has annual sales of approximately $6
million. Its primary products are specialty cleaners used for a broad range of
exterior surfaces. In addition, Chemtec
offers specialty, anti-slip and anti-graffiti
coatings. They are predominantly sold
directly to cleaning and painting contractors with the remainder through
paint stores.
