BASF patents kaolin pigments
Patent No. U.S. 7,494,541 B2
BASF Corporation has received a
patent for a method of processing
kaolin comprised sequentially: providing a kaolin crude comprising higher
amount of gray kaolin and a lower
amount of white kaolin; degritting the
kaolin crude; subject the degritted
kaolin crude to flotation to provide a
kaolin having reduced titania content;
ozonating the kaolin having reduced
titania content; centrifuging the kaolin
at high speeds to provide a coarse
stream and fine stream, the course
stream is comprised of kaolin wherein
at least approximately 70% by weight
has a size of 2 microns or less, the fine
stream is comprised of kaolin wherein
at least 80% by weight has a size of one
micron or less; refining the coarse
stream into a coarse engineered kaolin
pigment, wherein the coarse engineered
kaolin pigment has a surface area from
approximately 15-19 m2/g and 0.75%
by weight or less of titania; and refining
the fine stream into a fine glossing
kaolin pigment; with the proviso that
the method does not comprise fractioning the kaolin.
PPG PATENTS COATING
WITH SOLAR PROPERTIES
Patent No. U.S. 7,473,471 B2
PPG Industries has obtained a patent
for a coating comprised of an infrared
reflective layer; a primer layer over
the infrared reflective layer; a dielec-
tric layer over the primer layer; and
an absorbing layer. The absorbing
layer can be either under the infrared
reflective layer or over the dielectric
layer; wherein the absorbing layer is
comprised of an alloy and/or mixture
of a metal having an index of refrac-
tion at 500 nm less than or equal to
1.0 and a material having a ΔG°f of
greater than or equal to − 100 at
1,000°K; and wherein the metal is sil-
ver and the material is tin.
HENKEL PATENTS COATING
FOR COLD WORKING METALS
Patent No. U.S. 7,479,177 B2
Henkel AG & Co. has obtained a patent
for a composition for forming a combined
conversion and lubricating coating on a
metal substrate with which the composition is brought into contact. The composition is comprised of at least one
oxyethylated aliphatic alcohol whose
aliphatic hydrocarbon moiety contains
18 or more carbon atoms in an amount of
approximately 0.5-15% weight of the
composition; dissolved phosphate anions
having a concentration of at least 0.2%
weight and not more than 20% weight of
the composition; and a component selected from the group consisting of lithium
salts, sodium salts, and potassium salts
of fatty organic acids, wherein anions of
the fatty organic acids include at least 10
carbon atoms, and cations are selected
from the group consisting of sodium,
lithium, and potassium; the component
present in an amount, measured as its
stoichiometric equivalent as lithium
stearate with the stoichiometry being
based on equal numbers of carboxylate
anions, such that the component has a
ratio to the at least one oxyethylated
aliphatic alcohol that is at least 0.2:1.0
and not more than 10:1.0.
ECOLOGY COATINGS PATENTS
COATING FOR METAL
Patent No. U.S. 7,498,362 B2
Ecology Coatings has been granted a
patent for an actinic radiation curable,
substantially all solids composition comprised of a mixture of approximately 15-
45% by weight of an oligomer or a multiplicity of oligomers; 30-65% by weight of
a monomer or multiplicity of monomers;
2-10% by weight of a photoinitiator or a
multiplicity of photoinitiators; 0.1-5% by
weight of nano-alumina; and about 0.01-
2% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor or
a multiplicity of corrosion inhibitors;
wherein the cured composition is a
slick, abrasion and scratch resistant
coating with at least 6 H hardness; and
wherein thermal curing is not required
to attain the at least 6 H hardness.
CABOT PATENTS
NON-AQUEOUS COATING
Patent No. U.S. 7,495,042 B2
Cabot Corporation has received a
patent for a pigment composition comprised of at least one pigment and at
least one dispersant composition comprised of at least one anionic surfactant and at least one polymer comprised of at least one salt of a carboxylic acid group, wherein the pigment is a modified carbon product
comprised of a carbon product having
attached at least one organic group,
and wherein the organic group is comprised of at least one aromatic group or
at least one C1-C12 alkyl group and
further it is comprised of at least one
anionic group or salts thereof.
ECKART PATENTS
COPPER-BASED METAL FLAKES
Patent No. U.S. 7,485,365 B2
Eckart GmbH has been granted a
patent for lustrous copper-based
metal flakes that contain, in addition
to 70-98% weight copper, at least one
additional metallic alloy component
comprised of 2% to up to 30% weight
zinc and are produced via vacuum
evaporating of the separate components and wherein each component of
the alloy is evaporated separately,
deposition of alloy metal films onto a
carrier sheet, stripping of the films
from the carrier sheet and subsequent comminuting of the films
wherein the flakes have plane-paral-lel surfaces and a thickness of
between 20 and 60 nm. CW
