Arkema completes acquisition of UCAR
Arkema formally completed its acquisition of Dow’s acrylic monomers and
acrylic latex polymers (UCAR
Emulsion Systems) business in North
America. Following this acquisition,
the Clear Lake, TX acrylic monomers
production site is being integrated into
the existing acrylics business unit, within the Industrial Chemicals business
segment. The acrylic latex polymers
activity forms a new business unit dedicated to the paint, coatings, adhesives
and construction product markets –
Arkema Emulsion Systems. This new
business unit will be part of the
Industrial Chemicals business segment.
Richard Jenkins has been appointed president of this newly created
business unit. Arkema Emulsion
Systems is headquartered in Cary,
NC and operates three latex production facilities in Torrance, CA, Alsip,

Natrosol hydroxyethylcellulose products and
$0.08/lb. increase for its Aroset solvent-based
pressure-sensitive adhesive products.
BASF Catalysts: Feb. 1–$15-$40/MT for
industrial kaolins in the Americas.
Dow Coatings Materials: Feb. 1–10%
increase for all hydroxyethyl cellulose based
polymer products sold to the architectural and
industrial coatings markets in Europe, including central and eastern Europe, Russia and
Middle East.
Dow Coatings Monomers: Feb. 1–increase
for off schedule prices for acrylates, methacrylates and specialty monomers worldwide.
Evonik Industries: March 15–€140/MT
increase for Vestoplast adhesive resins.
Hydrite Chemical: Feb. 15–increase of list
and off-list pricing for Lucidene emulsions and
Morcryl solution product lines.
Oxea: Feb 1–€70/MT increase for i/n Butanol
IL and Hahnville, LA. Research and
development, marketing, sales and
administration functions are located
at the Cary, NC headquarters.
HEXION SPECIALTY CHEMICALS
TO BUILD PLANT IN KOREA
Hexion Specialty Chemicals has
announced plans to begin construction of a monomer manufacturing
plant in Onsan, Korea. The plant,
which will produce Cardura
monomer, a Versatic acid derivative,
will be constructed within an existing manufacturing complex of the
company in Onsan. Cardura
monomer is used as a key raw material in environmentally friendly
paint and coatings, such as automotive clear coats, coil coatings and
marine coatings where high solid,
water-based formulations and low
and i/n Butyl Acetate; €80/MT increase for 2-eth-
ylhexanol and €100/MT increase for Genomoll
100 in Europe.
Sartomer: March 15–$0.14-$0.22/lb. increase
for all oligomers, all acrylate and methacrylate
monomers and all MCure and Sarbox resins.
DISTRIBUTOR APPOINTMENTS
Clariant has appointed Dowd and Guild to
distribute its biocides and preservatives in
North America.
Gelest has appointed Fluorochem Ltd. as its
exclusive distributor in the United Kingdom and
Ireland of the company’s complete line of
silane, metal-organic and silicone catalogue
products.
Schlenk Metallic Pigments GmbH has
appointed Grolman GmbH & Co. to distribute its
aluminum and bronze pigments in Germany,
Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Ireland,
Benelux, Hungary, Romania, Moldavia, Bulgaria
and the region of the former Yugoslavia.
VOCs are required. Construction of
the new facility will begin in the first
quarter and completion is slated
before the end of the year.
DSM INAUGURATES NEW
RESINS PLANT IN GERMANY
Royal DSM N.V. has opened a new
plant for the production of wet polyesters and other specialty resins in
Meppen, Germany. The new € 15 million plant was built at the existing
site of DSM NeoResins+ in Meppen.
The plant allows for further expansions in the metal can packaging,
pre-painted coil metal, specialty decorative, specialty adhesives, graphic
arts and industrial wood markets.
NORTH DAKOTA STATE UNIVERSITY
AND TRITON SYSTEMS PARTNER
ON COATINGS RESEARCH
North Dakota State University,
Fargo and Triton Systems, Inc., a
Massachusetts-based materials products company, have announced a
research partnership and Triton’s
plan to establish a new facility in the
NDSU Research and Technology
Park. The company’s Fargo facility
will primarily be devoted to applications engineering and manufacturing
of advanced coatings for military
products including bed nets, tent fabrics, and military garments. Future
applications include chemical detection sensing systems.
The Triton facility, to be located in
Fargo’s NDSU Research and
Technology Park, will house Triton’s
novel and environmentally friendly
ASSET coatings capabilities. The
