RPM International Inc. is a multinational holding company with subsidiaries that manufacture and market high-per- formance coatings, sealants and specialty chemicals, primarily for maintenance, repair and improvement applications. In fiscal
2011, the company’s industrial products accounted for 67 percent
of its $3.381bn of total sales, with consumer products representing
the remaining 33 percent.
The Industrial Segment’s operating groups include RPM Building
Solutions Group, which provides roofing systems, sealants and concrete admixtures. Leading brands include Tremco, Tremco illbruck and
Euco. RPM Performance Coatings Group includes polymer floor coatings, corrosion control coatings and fiberglass reinforced plastic grating. Its primary brands include Stonhard, Carboline and Fibergrate.
RPM II Group offers specialty chemicals, exterior insulation and finish systems and recreational marine coatings. Major brands include
Day-Glo, Dryvit, Kop-Coat and Pettit.
RPM’s consumer products are sold primarily in North America
and have a growing presence in Europe, predominantly in the UK.
The Consumer Segment’s operating groups include Rust-Oleum
Group, which provides rust-preventative and small project paints,
primer-sealers, wallcovering preparation and removal products,
wood stains and finishes, mildew resistant paints and hobbyist products. Major brands include Rust-Oleum, Zinsser, Varathane, Tor
and Testors. DAP Group markets caulks, sealants and patch and repair products under the DAP brand.
During the year RPM’s Building Solutions Group (RPM BSG)
signed an agreement to acquire FEMA Farben + Putze GmbH
(FEMA GmbH) of Ettlingen, Germany. FEMA GmbH, with annual
sales of more than $40 million, is a manufacturer and supplier of external insulating and finishing systems (EIFS) and complementary
product lines to the German and French construction markets.
The Performance Coatings Group acquired the Grupo P&V group
of companies, a leading European vertically integrated supplier of passive fire protection and insulation products. Headquartered in
Barcelona, Spain, and with manufacturing in Villarana, Grupo has annual sales of approximately $23 million. Grupo manufactures, markets
and installs expanded perlite and vermiculite for passive fire protection,
soundproofing, and cryogenic and heat insulation applications.
The RPM Wood Finishes Group, a manufacturer of wood coat-
ings and touch-up and repair products, acquired Fuhr Industrial, a
provider of waterborne wood coating products and technologies
based in Mansfield, Texas. The combining of RPM’s waterborne
technologies with CCI’s industrial wood coatings line better enables
Fuhr to service the North American wood coatings markets with
environmentally friendly products.
Rust-Oleum product innovations
Rust-Oleum introduced several product innovations in 2011. Countertop Transformations is a do-it-yourself (DIY) decorative coating
system that can replicate the look of
sought-after countertop materials
like natural stone. It features Home-Shield Antimicrobial Protection to
protect the painted surface by inhibiting the growth of mold,
mildew and other odor or stain-causing microbes.
Rust-Oleum Professional Dry Erase Paint is another new product that
creates a writeable, erasable surface on walls in conference rooms, offices, classrooms, dorm
rooms, lobbies or anywhere
a dry erase surface is desired. The two-part water-based urethane coating can
also be used to convert existing chalkboards or dry
erase boards to new dry
erase surfaces, making it an
alternative to replacement.
