Beckers sold its wood finishes division, Becker Acroma, to Sherwin-Williams in 2010. At the time of the sale Becker Acroma was one of the largest manufacturers of industrial
wood coatings globally and a technology leader in water and other
wood coatings technology with annual sales of approximately
$300 million. Included in the divestment were Becker Acroma’s
nine manufacturing facilities, 19 mixing sites and 13 technical centers around the world, which serve the joinery, kitchen cabinet, furniture and flooring markets. Also during the year a new CEO was
appointed for Becker Industrial Coatings. Boris Gorella succeeded
Ralph Kabalo as the new chief executive and leader of the global
BIC business. October 2010 saw the official grand opening of a
new high performance coatings plant in Tianjin in northern China,
dedicated to consumer design finishes products. In May 2011, at

Berlin, Bengt Ingman, technical coordinator coil coatings at Becker
Industrial Coatings, was honored with the ECCA Outstanding
Contributor Award. Also during the year Saab's concept car
PhoeniX was coated with Beckers’ Ecochromo and unveiled at the
Geneva 2011 Motor Show. With its “aeromotional” design the
PhoeniX established a new reference point for future products to
be expected from Saab. The PhoeniX was designed by executive
design director Jason Castriota and his team. During spring 2010
the Saab design team was introduced to the Trend Collection created by Becker Industrial Coatings' Consumer Design Finishes
(CDF) division. This inspired Saab to approach Beckers at the end
of last year when in the process of designing and building the
PhoeniX. Beckers suggested the Ecochromo product developed at
its Italian site because Saab was looking for a special coating to
emphasize the liquid metal effect for their concept car.

KEY EXECUTIVES
Tetsuo Yamazumi, chairman; Masataka Uetake, president and CEO.
Chugoku Marine Paints, Ltd. is a Japan-based company that manufactures and sells paints for ship, industrial and con- tainer uses, as well as adhesives. Chugoku Marine Paints
(Shanghai), Ltd., a subsidiary located in Jiading District, Shanghai,
China, completed construction of its second factory and began operations. This factory, the company’s third manufacturing plant in
China following the first Shanghai factory and the Guangdong factory, was established in order to strengthen the company’s productivity and competitiveness, as well as increase customer satisfaction.
The new factory will supply paints for vessels, industrial paints for
bridges, industrial plants, steel structures, etc. and resins for paints.
In terms of new technology, CMP launched its Ekomate Series of
waterborne coatings for dry container. After many years of focused
research and development of waterborne coating systems, CMP said
it made a significant breakthrough with the Ekomate advanced wa-
terborne coating system, which could reduce VOC emissions by 80
percent when compared to solventborne coating systems. In addition, Ekomate products improve the working environment by reducing odors and because they are water-based rather than
solventborne, the products remove a number of hazards associated
with the risk flash ignition and fire. Following cooperation with dry
container box manufacturers and owners, which included many
trial applications in China, which is the hub of the new container
box manufacturing industry, the trials have demonstrated that the
Ekomate technology can be applied on existing production lines
with minimum adjustment to the norms or investment in new
equipment said the company. CMP Shanghai is manufacturing
2,000 tons of Ekomate per month and is expanding production capacity to meet market demand which in turn continues to elevate
CMP’s green policy and ongoing commitment to the environment.
